SNMG Compost Metal Cubes
I started my journey in agriculture backward. In 2018, I earned my NYC Department of Sanitation (DSNY) Snug Harbor Cultural Center & Botanical Garden Master Composting. I secured a 2018 Community-Scale Composting Grant from the Citizens Committee for New York City to build a wood-and-wire 3-bin system. During the pandemic, that system processed 1,200 lbs of food scraps weekly and supported our community for six years.
This summer, I decided it was time for an upgrade. I learned about the rat-proof metal compost cubes designed by Daniel Wendlek, gil lopez, and Boyce Tech employees Brandon Ye and Areyck Catipon. They have been using the bins since October 2021 and have developed the layered composting process at Big Reuse, which they created in 2021, and felt excited to try it at St Nicholas Miracle Garden. Big Reuse installed the new cube and gave us a hands-on tutorial so we can process organic waste more efficiently.
Our summer interns demoed the old bin and planned the arrival of the new cubes. Their teamwork made the transition possible, and together we’re elevating our composting program to the next level.
