FreshStorage Initiative
Keeping Produce Fresh, Supporting Local Farmers
Uptown & Boogie Healthy Project (UBHP) aims to scale its impact through the purchase of a refrigerated van, addressing a critical need for mobile cold storage and transportation. This investment represents a strategic next step, offering greater operational flexibility, reduced food spoilage, and improved logistics for delivering local produce directly to underserved communities. Unlike a stationary refrigerated container, the van provides dual functionality—storage and distribution—while requiring less upfront investment and fewer location-based hurdles. It supports UBHP’s mission to serve minority farmers in Upstate New York and residents of Harlem and the Bronx, helping bridge the gap caused by systemic disinvestment and infrastructure inequality.
The refrigerated van allows UBHP to grow its CSA and farm stand programs by enabling real-time pickups, adjusting routes based on demand, and expanding outreach to new partners like schools and health centers. This mobile model positions UBHP uniquely in a competitive market, offering culturally relevant, SNAP-accessible produce alongside education, youth engagement, and bilingual support—services not offered by mainstream grocers, CSA boxes, or other markets.
While high upfront and ongoing costs—fuel, maintenance, insurance, and staffing—pose challenges, UBHP will mitigate risks through preventive maintenance, staff training, strategic hiring, and logistical partnerships. The team will also address gaps in staffing, scheduling, and farmer coordination through the addition of a full-time operations coordinator and expanded part-time support.
Ultimately, this growth opportunity strengthens local food infrastructure, creates a scalable model for equitable food distribution, and moves UBHP closer to a resilient food system rooted in community health, empowerment, and sustainability.
About the Project
Why It Matters
Many communities lack access to fresh produce due to food deserts and limited cold storage options. Our refrigerated van bridges this gap, ensuring perishable food stays fresh longer, reducing waste, and increasing food accessibility.
What is the Refrigerator Van Project?
We are developing a mobile refrigerated van to store and distribute fresh produce efficiently. These units will be placed in key locations to support farmers' markets, community food programs, and local food businesses.
The Ideal Location
Strategic Placement for Maximum Impact
Uptown & Boogie Healthy Project will identify underused, vacant lots near the multi-family building for van placement and collaborate with local organizations to ensure that the van continues to have an accessible power source for distribution. A pilot program in the East Bronx will evaluate feasibility and community response while ensuring reliable access to electricity and water supply.
The Technology
Cutting-Edge Technology for Optimal Storage
We have identified advanced technologies, such as solar power and real-time monitoring systems, to ensure our van refrigeration units are energy-efficient and environmentally friendly.
Electricity Source
Power for the van temperature control systems for precise temperature regulation and lights
Monitoring Systems
Real-time temperature and humidity are monitored remotely via tablet or smartphone.
Microenterprise Model
The van will provide farmers with reliable storage, ensuring a consistent supply of fresh, high-quality produce for vendors and markets. It will benefit consumers by providing them access to a broader variety of locally sourced products.
From Farm to Van
Local farmers harvest their fresh produce at the peak of ripeness. Farmers then transport the harvested produce to the refrigeration van unit, minimizing the time between harvest and storage. Once at the unit, they carefully place the produce within the temperature-controlled environment. The unit's advanced refrigeration system maintains optimal temperature and humidity levels, preserving the freshness and quality of the produce.
From Van to Consumer
We sort and package the stored produce to ensure the highest quality reaches the market. We then distribute the packaged produce to local farmers' markets and businesses. Consumers purchase fresh, locally sourced produce from their preferred retail outlets.
Get Involved
We aim to raise $100,000 to cover capital and operational costs, including staffing, transportation, cold storage infrastructure, maintenance, and technology upgrades. Funding will come from a mix of grants, philanthropic donations, CSA subscription revenue, produce sales, and institutional contracts, supplemented by public funding and low-interest CDFI loans. We are also pursuing partnerships with organizations aligned with our values of food justice, workforce development, and climate resilience.
To ensure long-term sustainability, we are building systems for financial transparency, impact measurement, and revenue generation. Key investments include hiring and training a long-term driver and support staff, securing refrigeration-capable overnight parking, and strengthening farmer coordination through a shared logistics plan. Risk mitigation strategies—such as routine maintenance schedules and team training—are in place to ensure operational reliability.
To ensure effective implementation and continuous improvement of the refrigerated van program, UBHP will track process, outcome, and impact metrics using tools like digital surveys, inventory software, temperature loggers, and staff and partner feedback. Regular evaluations will assess efficiency, delivery performance, and community impact. Key metrics include pounds of produce transported, cold chain integrity, food waste rates, and financial costs versus benefits. Pre/post surveys and farmer interviews will help measure changes in food access, sales, and spoilage. This holistic, community-driven evaluation approach ensures accountability, responsiveness, and long-term program success.
Our success depends on building resilient infrastructure and staying responsive to the evolving needs of our community and farm partners. Through this investment, UBHP will deliver more fresh produce, reduce waste, and create a scalable model for equitable food access across Harlem and the Bronx.
